Towards Oil Slick Monitoring in the Arctic Environment

چکیده
We investigate the potential of multi-polarization and multi-frequency SAR systems to discriminate oil-in-sea-ice mixtures from newly frozen and young sea ice. The dielectric properties of oil emulsions, for a range of oil volume fractions, and theoretical co-polarization ratios for relevant media are modeled and discussed. We also compare the co-polarization ratios computed from actual detected oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico and the North Sea with available collections of sea ice data from the Arctic region. The results show promise for the purpose of SAR being used to separate oilin-sea-ice emulsions from newly frozen ice-covered Arctic sea water.

Artificial Neural Network Modeling for the Management of Oil Slick Transport in the Marine Environments
Due to an increase in demand of petroleum products which are transported by vessels or exported by pipelines, oil spill management becomes a controversial issue in coastal environment safety as well as making serious financial problems. After spilling oil in the water body, oil spreads as a thin layer on the water surface. Currents, waves and wind are the main causes of oil slick transport. The...

متن کاملBiodegradation of Dispersed Oil in Arctic Seawater at -1°C
As offshore oil and gas exploration expands in the Arctic, it is important to expand the scientific understanding of arctic ecology and environmental impact to mitigate operational risks. Understanding the fate of oil in arctic seawater is a key factor for consideration. Here we report the chemical loss due to the biodegradation of Alaska North Slope (ANS) crude oil that would occur in the wate...
متن کاملNumerical Modeling of Oil Slick Spread in the Persian Gulf
An oil spill model coupled with a hydrodynamic model was developed to simulate the spread of oil slick in real marine conditions considering the effects of tidal currents, wind and wave. The hydrodynamic model is verified using the measurements of tidal elevations and current speeds at the Persian Gulf. Effect of various governing factors on oil slick movement, tidal currents, wind and wave, ar...
